Gigi Jordan, a former pharmaceutical executive, was found dead inside her home in Brooklyn, New York, in an apparent suicide just hours after the Supreme Court revoked the bail for her manslaughter conviction.
Jordan, 62, was found dead in her apartment in the Stuyvesant Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn on Friday, Dec. 30. Jordan’s lawyer, Normal Siegel, confirmed her death to news outlets and said the city’s medical examiner’s office plans to conduct an autopsy.
Just hours before her death, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor issued an order revoking her bail, requiring her to return to prison while the courts considered her appeal over accusations of manslaughter.
The millionaire and former Big Pharma executive initially came into the spotlight in 2010 when she admitted to force-feeding a lethal dose of medications down the throat of her autistic eight-year-old son, Jude Mirra, in a hotel room before ingesting multiple medications herself. The cocktail of medications killed her son but not her.
At her trial, Jordan claimed that she decided to kill herself and her son because otherwise one of her ex-husbands would have killed her and then the boy would fall under the care of another ex-husband who would sexually abuse him. Jordan’s defense attorneys argued she murdered Mirra while in a state of extreme emotional disturbance over her fears regarding her two ex-husbands.
In Nov. 2014, she was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 18 years in prison. (Related: Rich pharma executive sociopath gets 18 years for killing her son in cold blood and happily watching him suffer.)
Jordan continued to appeal her case while in prison, citing her Sixth Amendment right to a fair and public trial. Her appeal rested on an incident at her trial during which the courtroom was closed for about 15 minutes to hear arguments regarding an email and a web posting. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office noted that Jordan “accused the court of undermining the fairness of the trial.”
Bragg argued that the 15 minutes of closed proceedings “did not otherwise affect any substantive matter before the jury,” and multiple lower courts agreed, noting that this did not violate Jordan’s Sixth Amendment rights. But in 2020, U.S. Magistrate Judge Sarah Cave agreed with Jordan, tossing her conviction out. She noted that, while the error itself did not harm Jordan’s case, it did violate her Sixth Amendment right to a fair trial and a new trial should be conducted.
On Dec. 9, 2020, after serving more than 10 years of her sentence, Jordan was sprung from prison. Cave ordered her released to home confinement on a $250,000 bond while the district attorney’s office appealed her case before the Supreme Court.
On Dec. 20, 2022, after over two years in home confinement, Sotomayor reaffirmed Jordan’s bail while the Supreme Court considered her case. But after Bragg filed papers before the court arguing against Jordan’s case, Sotomayor announced on Thursday, Dec. 29, that she was reversing herself, issuing an order that was expected to send the former pharmaceutical executive back to prison.
Hours later, at around 12:05 a.m. on Friday, she was found dead. Sources that spoke with media outlets noted that suicide is highly likely due to the recent revocation of her bail, with one even noting she was found dead in her bathtub with a possible suicide note nearby.
A New York Police Department spokesperson said the exact cause of her death is still unknown and the investigation is ongoing.
In his briefing to media outlets, Siegel said that he last spoke to his client by phone around 7:30 p.m. the day before her suicide was discovered. He said she was “in good spirits” and said that she will catch up with him again soon.
“It’s unbelievably sad. Gigi Jordan had a lot to offer society,” claimed Siegel. “In the end, she did not have her opportunity to contribute to society.”
